The Reason I Jump

From The Cover

Written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, The Reason I Jump is a one-of-a-kind book that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one at last have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within. Naoki answers even the most delicate questions that people want to ask. Questions such as: “Why do people with autism talk so loudly and weirdly?” “Why don’t you make eye contact when you’re talking?” and “What’s the reason you jump?” With disarming honesty and generous heart, Naoki shares his unique point of view on not only autism but life itself. His insights are so startling, so strange, and so powerful that you will never look at the world the same way again.

My Thoughts

Most of the children on my current caseload are just learning to communicate. We are working to find ways for them to express their wants and needs. I loved being able to get more insight into Naoki’s thoughts about autism because this isn’t something I get to see on a daily basis.

The first time I read The Reason I Jump I was sitting by the pool (doesn’t that sound nice right about now?!) and finished it in one sitting, it’s that good. He wrote the book in a question & answer format, making it an easy read. I know for myself it’s easy to just have my “clinician” hat on, this book really gives you another perspective and I found it so refreshing!

Who is this book for?
