What We Screen

Every screening is completed by a licensed speech-language pathologist using activities suited to your child’s age. We screen:

Articulation (speech sound production)

Expressive Language (use of language)

Receptive Language (comprehension of language)

Pragmatic Language (social language)

Fluency (stuttering)

A screening is a brief, informal look at your child’s communication, not a diagnostic evaluation. If a closer look would be helpful, we’ll walk you through your options and next steps.

You’ll be with your child the whole time.

We host in-office screenings once a month. Current dates and available times are always on our sign-up calendar.

Screening or Evluation: Which one does my child need?

A screening is a brief, informal look at your child’s communication. In about 20 minutes, our SLP can tell you whether your child’s skills look on track for their age or whether a closer look would be helpful. Think of it as a first step: quick, free, and a great fit when you’re wondering but not sure.

An evaluation is a comprehensive, in-depth assessment using standardized measures. It gives us a full picture of your child’s strengths and needs, results in a detailed written report, and is what’s needed to begin speech therapy services. Evaluations are also what physicians, schools, and insurance plans rely on.

A screening is a great starting point if:

  • You’ve noticed something small and want a professional’s take
  • A teacher or family member mentioned a concern, but you’re not sure it’s significant
  • You want reassurance that your child’s development is on track

You can skip the screening and go straight to an evaluation if:

  • Your child’s pediatrician, teacher, or another professional has recommended an evaluation
  • Your child is not yet talking, or has very few words for their age
  • Your child previously received speech therapy or early intervention services
  • You’ve had concerns for a while and they’re not fading; a screening would likely just confirm what you already sense
  • Your child is hard to understand, even for family members

There’s no wrong door. If you start with a screening and an evaluation is recommended, we’ll help you take that next step. And if you book an evaluation and everything looks great, that’s wonderful news worth having in writing.
